Police arrest 207 robbery suspects, recover 50 vehicles

The Oyo State Police Command recently announced significant strides in crime prevention and apprehension of suspects. According to SP Adewale Osifeso, the State Police Public Relations Officer, a notable 207 armed robbery suspects have been apprehended, and a substantial recovery of 50 vehicles has been made within the period from January to December.

During a press briefing held at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, SP Adewale Osifeso disclosed that the achievements also encompass the retrieval of 46 motorcycles and tricycles, along with 108 firearms and 721 rounds of ammunition of various calibres from individuals suspected of criminal activities.

In response to the prevailing situation, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebola Hamzat, has issued directives to all area commanders, divisional police officers, and other relevant personnel to reinforce efforts in combating crime. This involves deploying adequate manpower and resources to address security concerns effectively.

Emphasizing a strategic approach, Osifeso highlighted the Commissioner’s directives, stating, “The CP has instructed increased supervision by area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders. This includes close oversight of field personnel who regularly engage with commuters and other civilian populations.”

Moreover, to maintain discipline and accountability within the force, Osifeso stressed, “The command’s monitoring and x-squad units are diligently addressing any form of misconduct among officers. The Imo State police have verified the tragic loss of eight members from a single family due to a car accident at the Amanwozuzu junction in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

The confirmation of this unfortunate incident came from Lucky Ahiole, the Divisional Police Officer overseeing the Ikeduru LGA, during an interaction with reporters in Owerri on Friday.

The DPO explained that the accident occurred around 3:00 pm on Friday, claiming the lives of all eight individuals who were traveling in a Sienna car.

Reportedly, the Sienna vehicle collided with a stationary truck loaded with rods, resulting in the fatal outcome for the passengers.

Gunmen Attack Chris Uba’s Convoy, Kill Two Security Operatives

Last night, a convoy believed to be associated with Chief Chris Uba, a prominent figure in Anambra politics, came under attack by unidentified gunmen.

According to a source speaking to DAILY POST, the convoy’s vehicles were heavily fired upon, resulting in the tragic death of two police officers who were part of Uba’s security detail. Additionally, another political figure, Mr. Val Ozigbo, narrowly escaped harm during the attack.

The source recounted, “We witnessed the alarming incident where Chris Uba’s convoy encountered armed individuals stationed at UGA junction, triggering a shootout. While Uba managed to escape, shielded by a bulletproof vehicle, the policemen accompanying him lost their lives.”

“Val Ozigbo, returning from Owerri with family members, noticed a convoy aggressively advancing towards his own. He immediately instructed his driver to yield, allowing the other convoy to pass. Shortly after overtaking Ozigbo’s convoy, the gunmen at UGA junction unleashed gunfire, claiming the lives of two policemen. Ozigbo parked during the chaos and later learned that the targeted convoy belonged to Uba.”

Reports suggest the assailants’ aim was to abduct the politician. Although several individuals sustained injuries, it remains unclear if anyone was kidnapped.

In response to the incident, the state police command, through its spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a statement indicating a thorough pursuit for the attackers.

The statement read, “The Anambra State Police Command has launched an extensive search for armed insurgents who infiltrated from a neighboring state, resulting in the tragic deaths of two Police Personnel on December 28, 2023, at approximately 6:30 p.m.”

“These assailants, disguised in military attire and apparently on a kidnapping mission, opened fire upon encountering two armed Police officers approaching their direction. Subsequent exchange of gunfire prompted the bandits to flee, mindful of the multitude of motorists caught in traffic.”

“Prompt response by a police-led mobile Forward Operating Base led to the recovery of a Lexus SUV used by the attackers, alongside the defusal of an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle. Additionally, an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain officers was recovered.”

“Commending the relentless efforts of officers during the Christmas period, Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, acknowledged the sacrifice of the Enugu State Command officers and offered condolences to their families. He reassured the commitment to apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing the use of technology in the pursuit.”

“He urged all officers within the Anambra State Police Command to remain vigilant, drawing inspiration from their colleagues’ bravery and emphasizing that the sacrifice made will not be in vain. Efforts continue to track down those responsible for the attack on police personnel.”

Residents residing near Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s home in the Jericho area of Ibadan remain uncertain about the reported passing of the Ondo State governor.

According to Report, Akeredolu, aged 67, reportedly passed away on Wednesday morning in Germany following a prolonged battle with Leukemia.
