Popular Afrobeat sensation Davido recently made an intriguing yet inaccurate statement regarding Nigeria’s ethnic composition, asserting that the nation comprises only three tribes: Yoruba, Igbo, and Benin.
During a lively conversation with the popular American content creator Kai Cenat, who is currently in Nigeria for a documentary project, Davido made the erroneous claim. He shared, “We have three tribes in Nigeria. There’s Yoruba. My father is Yoruba. And in Nigeria, wherever your father is from, that’s where you are really from. So my father is Yoruba. My wife is from Igbo. And my mother is from Benin. I’m three tribes in one.”
Despite Davido’s well-intentioned but inaccurate assertion, Nigeria’s ethnic diversity far exceeds the confines of three major tribes. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria boasts a rich tapestry of 371 distinct tribes, each contributing to the country’s cultural mosaic.

It’s crucial to recognize the plurality and richness of Nigeria’s ethnic makeup, which extends beyond the commonly acknowledged Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa ethnic groups. Embracing this diversity fosters a deeper appreciation for Nigeria’s cultural heritage and reinforces the unity amidst its multiplicity.
In light of Davido’s statement, it’s an opportune moment to celebrate and acknowledge the multitude of ethnic identities that coexist harmoniously within Nigeria, shaping its vibrant and multifaceted national identity.
