Super Eagles head coach, Randy Waldrum, sheds light on his decision to bench Asisat Oshoala in Monday’s 2024 Olympic Games qualifier against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses.
The reigning African women’s Player of the Year was slated to start the game, but Waldrum opted for Tenerife star Esther Okoronkwo in the starting lineup.
Okoronkwo validated the coach’s decision by scoring the winning goal in the 14th minute.
Oshoala was later subbed in during the second half.

Explaining his decision post-game, Waldrum emphasized selecting the best lineup for the match.
“We fielded what we believed was the strongest eleven to kick off the match. However, we have full confidence in every player. Some didn’t get minutes, but they are fully capable of contributing,” stated the American coach.
