Thierry Henry, an iconic figure in Arsenal’s history, recently shared a candid revelation about his enduring battle with mental health challenges during his illustrious football career.
The former French international disclosed his long-standing struggle with depression, shedding light on how it persisted, particularly intensifying amid the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During an episode of the Diary of a CEO podcast, Henry, renowned for his tenure at Barcelona as well, expressed, “Throughout my life, and my entire career, I believe I wrestled with depression. Was I aware of it? No. Did I take action? No. Instead, I adjusted to cope in my own way. It doesn’t mean I walked a straight path, but I kept moving forward.”
He emphasized the importance of resilience, stating, “You have to take that first step, then another, and keep moving forward. That’s what I’ve been taught since childhood.”

Henry reflected on a critical realization, revealing, “I never paused in my journey; perhaps if I had, I might have recognized it. However, during the COVID period, I couldn’t continue moving forward. That’s when the realization struck.”
Sharing a poignant insight into his emotional state, Henry disclosed, “[There were] days when I found myself crying without a discernible reason. Tears flowed involuntarily. I couldn’t pinpoint why, but maybe they were long-overdue emotions. It wasn’t me in the moment; it was the younger version of me, mourning everything he never received: acknowledgment and validation.”
