The Founder of Internet Safety Magazine and CEO of Onadipe Technologies, Mr. Rotimi Onadipe has advised all parents to make sure their children are well educated about internet safety before giving them access to mobile phone or social media.

Onadipe made this known to parents during his organisation’s weekly program with the theme “SAY NO TO INTERNET ABUSE, SAY YES TO INTERNET SAFETY” which was held at Ibadan on Saturday April 30th 2022.

The internet safety advocate said it is no longer news that online abuse among youths, teenagers and even minors is now a global challenge of today’s technology age as evident in several news platforms and social media.

According to Onadipe, giving a child access to mobile phone or social media without giving him or her proper education about internet safety is like signing one’s own death warrant, as it will cause more harm than good to the lives of both the child and the parents.

ALSO SEE: Many Trapped as Three-storey Building Collapses In Ebute Metta (Video)

He said “It is very sad that many of our youths are no longer talking about ethics and moral values because they now spend most of their time on the internet, watching immoral videos. Online child pornography and cybersex are now the other of the day among many youths, teenagers and even minors in our society. It is high time we addressed this social ills before the problems become uncontrollable for all of us.”

“There is nothing wrong in giving a child access to mobile phone or social media if the child is well informed about online safety, which involves protecting oneself from potential dangers associated with internet usage.”

“Before you give these innocent children access to mobile phone or internet, are these children aware of the importance of protecting themselves online? are they aware there are sensitive and personal information they should not disclose to strangers? are they aware there are pedophiles looking for victims of their age online? are they aware there are online predators in several social media platforms? are they aware there are some websites that are mainly for adults? are they aware there are hackers searching for vulnerable children on the internet? are they aware about the dangers of being addicted to mobile phone or social media? are they aware of the danger of sharing their nude pictures with anyone online?”

“I don’t know how these children will know about all these online dangers and how to avoid them if they are not given adequate information about internet safety” he added.

In his final statement, Onadipe said “My advice to all parents is this, please don’t give these innocent children access to the internet or mobile phone if they are not well informed about internet safety.”

Mr. Rotimi Onadipe, Founder of Internet Safety Magazine and Chief Executive Officer, Onadipe Technologies has unveiled plan to hold a conference with relevant stakeholders with a view to providing a lasting solution to online abuse among minors, youths and our society in today’s digital age.

Onadipe, who has been informing, guiding and educating the public about how to avoid online dangers for several years disclosed this to journalists in Ibadan on Thursday. He said the alleged Chrisland school girl rape scandal is a wake-up call, not only for parents but for all of us that online abuse is a real problem in our society and it deserves urgent attention.

“Many of us heard about this ugly incident because some people posted it on social media and it went viral. What about the ones that happened but were not posted online and thousands of people, including minors are still watching it secretly on their mobile phones?”

The internet safety advocate said, “the Chrisland school girl rape saga has clearly revealed to us the level of moral decadence in our society. However, I am already discussing about a conference on the matter with relevant stakeholders with a view to finding a lasting solution to this end time evil”

“There are some important questions we need to ask ourselves as stakeholders”

ALSO SEE: Chrisland School Girl Runs Erotic Short Video Page On Popular App With Handle “Bhadgurl4k” (Photos)

“Where have we missed it as parents, teachers, counselors, religious leaders, students, policy makers and members of the society?”

“What danger have we left unattended that is now hunting after us and hurting us?”

“Now is the right time for us to come together and identify our vulnerabilities to know how some of us have ignorantly or deliberately contributed to these social ills”

“There is a Yoruba proverb that goes thus: Amukun, eru e wo, o ni oke len wo, e o wo isale which means sometimes the wrong we see is a symptom of a fundamental cause.” Onadipe said this is exactly what we are going through but it is not too late for us to identify our mistakes and do the needful.

In his final statement, he said the date and venue of the conference will be communicated to the public as soon as it is fixed.

The Founder of internet safety magazine and CEO of Onadipe Technologies, Mr. Rotimi Onadipe has informed internet users all over the world what to do to reduce online abuse e.g. internet fraud, cyber bullying, online pornography, cybersex, online gaming addiction etc. which are now prevalent among youths and our society in today’s technology age.

Onadipe, whose published articles on internet safety are in several news platforms and have been used by many stakeholders, researchers, scholars, authors and many academic outlets around the world, shared his expert opinion with Nigerians and internet users all over the world during his organisation’s weekly programme tagged “SAY NO TO INTERNET ABUSE, SAY YES TO INTERNET SAFETY”

In this week’s programme held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Saturday April 16th 2022, Onadipe said “Internet Safety is our collective responsibility. We all have a role to play in making sure the internet is safe and secure for everyone.”

ALSO SEE: How To Spot And Avoid Investment Scams

“We must be informed that no matter how rich, influential educated or intelligent we are, irrespective of our age, sex, status, tribe or nationality, we are not exempted from online dangers.

“For the war against online abuse to be won in our society of today, all hands must be on deck because our greatest weapon against cyber crimes, cyber criminals and online dangers in general is internet safety education.

“I have a strong belief that if internet users can educate themselves about how to stay safe online through my published articles on internet safety which have now gone viral on the internet, they will be able to protect themselves and others from many online dangers.”

“Many internet users within and outside Nigeria are already educating themselves through those informative and educative articles and sharing them with other internet users to protect themselves against online risks.

“This is why I am urging all internet users all over the world to use every opportunity they have online to search for these articles, read them, share with others and ask questions if they have any. This will go a long way to reduce online dangers among youths and our society at large.” He added.

In his concluding statement, Onadipe said “internet safety is now at your fingertips. To access these articles is very simple. All you need to do is to search for Rotimi Onadipe online, read the articles, share with others and ask questions if you have any.”

Scam is simply defined as an illegitimate or deceptive plan of making money, particularly by tricking unsuspecting victims e.g. individuals, companies or organisations.

With the advancement of technology, particularly the invention of high tech devices everywhere e.g. smartphones and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices, there is no doubt that we now live in an age where almost anything seems possible, good, easy, cheap and available.

The scammers are aware of this development and they are also taking advantage of the situation to trick unsuspecting victims to giving their money, property, personal or sensitive information to them. They are always looking for ways to make money at the expense of unsuspecting victims.

Internet related crimes are getting more sophisticated every day because of advancement of technology. As far as online scams are concerned, we are all vulnerable irrespective of age, gender, status, tribe, academic qualification or nationality.

We must be informed that the menace of online scams in our society cannot be totally eradicated in today’s technology age but we can reduce it to the barest minimum by educating ourselves, implementing best practices and staying vigilant at all times.

There are many reasons why many people fall prey to online scams but here are some common reasons:

1. Greediness: Most people with excessive desire for wealth usually fall victim to any kind of scam.

2. Ignorance: A lot of people fall prey to scams because they have little or no knowledge about the common tricks used by scammers.

3. Gullibility: Anybody that can be easily convinced that something is true or real will always fall prey to almost any type of scam.

4. Lack of proper investigation: Scammers send a lot of scam emails every day and many unsuspecting victims respond without doing proper investigation.

5. Urgent desire for free offer: Scammers send out information containing free offer of goods, services and free money to trick unsuspecting victims and many unsuspecting victims fall for the scams because they want free money or goods and services that they won’t pay for.

ALSO READ: How To Spot And Avoid Investment Scams

6. Desperation to gain employment: Many unemployed people that are desperate to get job fall victim to unemployment scams on a daily basis.

7. Fear of missing a great opportunity: Many unsuspecting victims fall for scams because they don’t want to miss the deceptive business opportunities introduced to them by scammers.

8. Lack of special internet safety education for aged people and young children: Elderly people and young children are key targets of scammers because they are the most vulnerable.

9. Lack of frequent awareness campaigns: Lack of regular awareness campaigns to sensitise the general public on the dangers and lasting solutions to scams makes many people to fall prey to scams.

10. Urgent desire for cheap products: Many people fall victim to scams because they are urgently looking for cheap products.

11. Carelessness: Many people are careless about their personal and sensitive information and this increases their vulnerabilities to any kind of scam.

12. Many victims don’t want to share their stories: When victims don’t share their stories with others, others will continue to fall prey to scams.

Safety tips to avoid online scams:

1. Investigate thoroughly before you invest in any business. More importantly, don’t believe everything you see online.

2. Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information on social media.

3. Report any suspicious or fraudulent activity immediately to the police or other anti-crime organizations.

4. Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information through phone conversation.

5. Be suspicious of any goods or services that is free.

6. When you receive strange calls or text messages frequently, be suspicious.

7. Check your online and offline accounts regularly to know if there is any fraudulent activities.

8. Avoid connecting to the internet through public WiFi.

9. Avoid clicking on any link or downloading any attachment if you are not sure the information is safe and secure.

11. When you are contacted to provide personal or sensitive information online by any individual or organization, be suspicious and do a thorough investigation.

12. Avoid doing online transaction in any website that you don’t trust.

13. If an offer sounds too good to be true, be suspicious and do a thorough investigation.

14. Use anti-virus software and keep it updated with the operating system of your device.

15. When you receive any call from your bank requesting for your personal or sensitive information, don’t provide the information but visit your bank immediately to address the issue.

An advocate of internet safety based in Ibadan Oyo State, Mr. Rotimi Onadipe has commended the efforts of journalists for their roles in reducing cyber crimes and online abuse among youths and the society at large through the publication of his articles on internet safety.

Rotimi Onadipe has written and published several articles on internet safety to inform, guide and educate internet users globally on how to stay safe online and avoid online risks e.g. cyber crimes, social media addiction, pornography addiction, online gaming addiction, among others.

Onadipe, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Onadipe Technologies and Founder, Internet Safety Magazine said his published articles on internet safety had gone viral on the internet and he had received calls and emails from different parts of the world from people who almost fell victim to online scams but were more enlightened after reading his articles online and contacted him for proper counseling.

He disclosed this to journalists in Ibadan during an awareness campaign on internet safety to educate the public about the importance of creating awareness about online safety from time to time.

“I must confess that journalists have helped our society so much in reducing online dangers through their publications. People contacted me from different parts of the world and told me they read my articles on internet safety in some news websites.

They shared their experiences on internet fraud with me. I counseled them and they were able to avoid falling victim to internet fraud and other online dangers.”

“Who knows what would have happened to many of these unsuspecting victims if they had not read those articles on internet safety that were published by the journalists?

“We are all aware of the great damage which the menace of online abuse, particularly cybercrime had caused to many lives and our society at large. Many victims have attempted suicide, many teenagers have been killed while a lot of youths have been jailed for various internet related offences around the world.”

“We must be informed that the main reason for the prevalence of cyber crimes among our youths and society at large in today’s digital age is because most internet users have little or no knowledge about internet safety.”

“As technology advances every day, online abuse also increases but our greatest weapon against cyber crimes and cyber criminals in today’s technology age is awareness and education about internet safety.”

“This of course, can only be more effective through the efforts of journalists. Journalists are really doing great job in the fight against online abuse among youths and our society at large and we must commend them for their efforts.” Onadipe added.

What is internet safety?

Internet safety refers to precautions that should be observed when using the internet in order to ensure the safety of the user’s personal or sensitive information, device, properties, life etc.

The human life has become very interesting with the introduction of the internet, social media, smart phones, iPad and other High Tech devices.

With this development, there is no doubt that the first thing we view in the morning and the last thing we view at night is our mobile phone or computer because of our need to communicate with friends, family members, neighbors, business partners etc.

However, as good as the internet is, we must be informed about the dangers associated with internet usage e.g. internet fraud, hacking, cyber bullying, social media addiction, online gaming addiction, pornography or cybersex addiction etc.

As far as internet abuse and cyber crimes are concerned, we are all vulnerable in one way or the other and the best way we can reduce our vulnerability is to be educated about internet safety irrespective of our age, sex, status, nationality, profession or academic qualification.

It is very important for us to know that we don’t have to become information technology experts before we can stay safe online. If we have the right information that we need, we can protect ourselves against many online risks associated with internet usage.

ALSO SEE: A Student Tried To Commit Suicide After Several Heartbreaks

Adopting the following safety tips is a good way to educate ourselves about internet safety:

1. Use strong password. The stronger your password, the tougher it is to crack by cyber criminals. Make sure your password is long. Use at least 14 characters and mix letters, numbers and special characters.

2. Change your password from time to time because you may not know if a cyber criminal is monitoring your password.

3. Keep your browser and other programs updated. If you are not updating on a regular basis, your device may continue to be vulnerable to different cyber attacks.

4. When you receive an email that has an attachment or a link, don’t download the attachment or follow the link if you are not 100% sure it is legitimate. Cyber criminals send unsolicited emails with malicious attachment or link on a daily basis and many unsuspecting victims have ignorantly downloaded such malicious attachments and followed the link, after which their private and sensitive information were stolen e.g. username, password, credit card information, personal identification number, bank account details etc.

5. Avoid sharing your private and sensitive information online. This is because cyber criminals can easily get your personal information through any online platform and use it for fraudulent purposes.

6. Avoid using public Wi-fi. e.g. cyber cafe, hotel, restaurant, banks, colleges, airport etc. This is because most public Wi-fi are easy to hack by cyber criminals. It is also very easy for cyber criminals to monitor any internet user in public places through the CCTV attached to their devices.

7. Talk to your children about internet safety so that they don’t ignorantly disclose your personal and sensitive information to internet fraudsters. Most children that are on social media are the targets of cyber criminals and many children may ignorantly divulge their parents’ personal and sensitive information to cyber criminals.

8. When you receive an email warning you of some consequences if you don’t take action immediately, be suspicious of such email. e.g. when you are warned that your bank account will be closed or that that unauthorized charges have been deducted from your bank account, credit card, utility bills, online mobile recharge etc.

9. Don’t post your travel plans and other activities on social media because most cyber criminals get their victims’ information through the social media.

10. Conclusively, knowledge is your greatest weapon against cyber criminals. Make sure you always contact experts or counselors on cyber crime and other related matters so that they can educate you about the common tricks of cyber criminals. This is very important because as technology advances, new fraud schemes are being developed on a daily basis by cyber criminals.

In his opening remarks in this edition, Onadipe said internet abuse is a real problem in today’s society, adding that through his research and counseling, “when internet abuse is not properly controlled or prevented, it leads to other social vices, e.g indecent dressing, prostitution, pre-marital sexual activities, rape, pedophilia, cultism, drug addiction, among others.

“In today’s technology age, the menace of internet abuse had done incalculable damage to many lives and the society at large. Many homes have broken, many lives traumatized, businesses crashed, ministries folded up, many individuals and companies have lost their reputations, while a large number of youths have been jailed for various internet-related crimes.”

Among the articles written by Onadipe to educate the public on how to avoid online dangers include, Ten tips to avoid social media addiction as a child of God, The dangerous effect of online gaming and social media addiction on the academic performance of Nigerian youths, Twenty tips to avoid social media addiction as a teenager, How to protect your children online, Hushpuppi saga: A wake-up call for public awareness about Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams, among others.

To indicate the positive effect of previous magazines and the training of the publisher, Professor Anna Droll, President, Kairos Global Missions in the US, writes how she interviewed Mr Onadipe for her research project for a PhD at the Fuller Theological Seminary, USA.

She says, “Onadipe’s report of the roles of dreams and visions in directing his steps toward his current work was quiet amazing.”

Also, Dr Felix Ajijola of the Department of History and Strategic Studies of the University of Lagos says, “Cybercrime is one of the nefarious and illicit phenomena gaining momentum among youths globally.

The obnoxious act has greatly affected the image of Nigeria in the global community, but Pastor Rotimi Onadipe is at the forefront of social reengineering.

As a patriotic stakeholder for an ideal society predicated on honesty godliness, hardwork and responsibility, he has contributed tremendously in the fight against internet abuse, illicit activities and fraudulent practices rampant among some unscrupulous youths in Nigeria.

Also, the member representing Ogbomoso North in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, admits that “In today’s digital age, people spend countless hours throughout the day on social media, and at the end of the day have absolutely nothing productive to show for it.

Pastor Onadipe and his team have, however, come up with strategies to educate the public on the dangers and lasting solutions to internet abuse and cybercrime, rehabilitation of repentant cybercriminals through vocational training.”

One of the beneficiaries of the magazine and training, Gbemisola Onadipe, said “Before I became a minister of God, I used to spend a lot of time on social media.

In fact, I was a First Class addict until I went through my husband’s counseling and rehabilitation programme on internet abuse awareness and prevention. Since then, I have composed over 2,000 music tracks as I am now more productive.”

Internet abuse and internet addiction are strong weapons that the enemy known as “satan” had planned to use to steal, kill and destroy the glorious future of many people in these last days.

It is no longer news in our society that we have multiple cases of children of the same parents having sex with each other, people having sex with animals, rape cases involving minors have also increased tremendously.

It is very sad that youths of these days are desperate to become billionaires even while they are still in primary, secondary or tertiary institution because they believe this can be achieved through the internet. Internet abuse, particularly internet fraud is now the order of the day among youths in today’s technology age.

What is internet abuse?

Internet abuse can be defined as improper use of the internet. e.g. internet fraud, sexting, online impersonation, cyber bullying, identity theft etc

Internet addiction refers to excessive use of internet that is detrimental to the user’s daily obligations. e.g. online gaming or gambling addiction, cybersex or pornography addiction, online relationship addiction, compulsive web surfing etc.

Internet abuse or internet addiction has no respect for age, status or academic qualification. No matter how highly placed you are, you can be a victim of internet abuse or internet addiction and this may have negative effects on almost all aspects of your life.

Internet abuse or addiction will take you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.

Who is an internet addict?

How you feel when you are not online answers the question.

Practical and sensitive questions about internet abuse and addiction:

Your answers to these questions will give you a clear picture of an internet addict.

Do you spend more time than you really intend on the internet?

Do you feel restless or moody when you can’t go online?

How do you feel when your phone battery is down for some time?

How do you react when you misplace your mobile phone?

Can you do without checking your phone or social media account in a day?

What exactly do you do online and does it add any value to your life in anyway?

Do you spend as much time on the word of God the same way you do on social networking sites?

Does your internet usage serve as an escape from problems or relief from a bad mood?

Finally, have you made repeated but unsuccessful attempts to stop or control your internet use?

Your answer to the above questions will help you to know if you are addicted to the internet or not.

How to overcome the danger of internet abuse and addiction in these last days:

1. Keep your heart pure. Everything we do in life originates from the heart. The word of God in Proverb 4:23 says “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life”. In order to keep your heart pure, the first step is to surrender your heart to God sincerely.

2. Spend more time to pray on your heart and dedicate it to God everyday because that is the source of everything you do in life.

3. You must be conscious of the fact that internet abuse and internet addiction are strong weapons that satan is using in these last days to steal, kill, destroy the future of people and prevent them from getting to heaven.

4. Make sure you always observe your quite time before you check your phone or social media account every day.

5. You must be informed that there are different kinds of people with different mission on the internet. i.e. Some people have good intention while others are searching for victims.

6. You should have a definite time for your internet usage every day and write all you want to do in a paper. i.e. If it is one hour, make sure you don’t exceed one hour and don’t do anything different from what you wrote down. It is more advisable to let all your contacts know that you have a definite time for internet usage.

7. Always take a record of what you have benefited from your online activities.

8. Reduce the number of your telephone lines and social media accounts.

9. Don’t be desperate. Make sure you are contented with what you have.

10. When you cannot help yourself, contact a counselor before it is too late.
