  • Minimum Wage: Oyo State Can’t Pay N30,000 – Governor-Elect, Seyi Makinde

Minimum Wage: Oyo State Can’t Pay N30,000 - Governor-Elect, Seyi Makinde

The Oyo State Governor-Elect, Seyi Makinde, has said his state cannot pay the new National Minimum Wage of N30,000 just signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Seyi Makinde revealed that state governments ought to have been allowed to negotiate the new minimum wage for their workers as the condition of living varies from state to state.

In Abuja, briefing journalists after the induction programme for returning and newly elected governors, Makinde said that he intends to renegotiate the implementation of the new minimum wage with the state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Assessing Oyo’s ability to pay the legal N30,000 minimum wage, the Governor-Elect stated:

“It has been signed into law. I personally believe that individual states should have been allowed to negotiate this because conditions of living in Lagos are obviously not the same as living in Ibadan.

And I will definitely say without fear or favour that it’s part of the reasons why we are thinking of restructuring.

That’s a federal system of government.

We have a federation but the state governments I believe, are no subordinate to the federal government.

    They are coordinate governments.

Then, when the federal government makes a law that says ‘well, we are going to pay 30,000 as minimum wage,’ what’s the condition in my state? Can we support it? I don’t think.”

  • Adeleke Is Qualified To Contest For Governor – Appeal court

Adeleke Is Qualified To Contest For Governor - Appeal court

Following an earlier judgement of a High Court in Bwari, Abuja, which declared him ineligible to contest the election.

The issue bordered on the controversy over Adeleke’s secondary school certificate submitted to INEC for the election.

The lower court had ruled that the senator did not have a valid secondary school certificate and so failed to satisfy the minimum requirement for eligibility to contest the election.

Adeleke and his legal team appealed the judgement.

The appeal court’s three-member panel of M.A. Danjuma (presiding); R.M. Abdullahi, and P.A. Mahmoud, allowed the appeal and upturned the judgement of the High Court in Abuja.

The appellate court allowed the appeal on the grounds that the complainant, Awosiyan Kingsley, from Ife Central, lacked the locus standi.

It also established a case of lack of jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

The court also agreed with the appellants that the matter was status barred given the limitation of time of 14 Days within which a litigant on pre-election matters could institute a case or maximum of 180 days to hear and determine the case.

Although Adeleke’s counsel had raised these arguments before the Bwari High Court, the court still ruled against him.

Reacting to the judgment, a counsel to Adeleke, Nathaniel Oke, said the latest judgment cancels the judgment of an Abuja High Court and renders its conclusion ineffective on the candidacy of Mr Adeleke for the September 2018 gubernatorial election.

He said the Abuja high court judgment had contradicted the Osogbo high court verdict by rejecting the testimony of WAEC, an examination body which in a sworn affidavit confirmed that Adeleke sat for its examination.

He said the examination body also attached the result to the affidavit.

  • N30,000 MINIMUM WAGE! Buhari, Governors’ Meeting Ends In Deadlock

N30,000 MINIMUM WAGE! Buhari, Governors’ Meeting Ends In Deadlock

A meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Governor’s Forum to resolve the raging dispute over the proposed N30,000 National Minimum Wage ended in a deadlock on Monday in Abuja.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa.

The Chairman of the NGF, and Governor of Zamfara State, Mr Abdulazeez Yari, led a smaller team of governors to the meeting to speak for the Forum.

Those at the meeting included Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode; Kebbi State Governor, Mr Atiku Bagudu; and the Enugu State Governor, Mr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, was also at the meeting.

Recall that the majority of the 36 state governors had maintained that they could only afford to pay N22,500 as the new minimum wage.

They had also stated that the other options were for them to reduce their workforce or the Federal Government would have to review the revenue sharing formula to make more money available to the states.

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Kayode Fayemi, is one of the key proponents of a revenue formula review.

Signs of a deadlock at the meeting was noticed when the governors emerged wearing long faces and refused to formally address State House correspondents.

One after another, Yari and his colleagues declined to talk.

Similarly, the President’s Media Office, which earlier promised to brief reporters on the outcome of the meeting, also kept mum after the meeting.

As of the time of filing this report, the media office had yet to respond to any inquiries.

However, findings indicated that pressure was put on the governors to move up to N24,000, a middle course the federal government was said to be disposed to as the NMW.

  • Governor Ganduje Sues Daily Nigerian For N3billion Over Dollar Video

Governor Ganduje Sues Daily Nigerian For N3billion Over Dollar Video

An online news platform, Daily Nigerian has been sued by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state over dollar videos.

Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has sued an online platform, Daily Nigerian and its publisher, Jafaar Jafaar, for defamation.
He is claiming N3billion in damages.
Counsel to Ganduje, Nuradeen A. Ayagi in a writ of summons tendered before the High Court demanded the defendants to file an appearance before 14 days. The writ was dated 13 November.
Daily Nigerian, had published stories and videos alleging that the Kano state Governor collected $5 Million as kickback from contractors.
Nuradeen asked the court to declare that the act of publishing and circulating libellous statements, false and doctored video clips attacking and impugning the character and integrity of the plaintiff amounts to defamation of character of the plaintiff by the defendants and thus wrongful.
He also asked for order perpetually restraining the defendants, their agents and all persons and entities to whom they shared their libellous documents/records from further defaming the good standing and character of the plaintiff
The suit also seeks an order compelling the defendants to write a public apology to the plaintiff and broadcast such apology through their online platforms and news media with global accessibility.
Daily Nigerian in a report on its website quoted its publisher, Jaafar as saying that its lawyers would study the court papers and respond appropriately.
The remorseless paper in its report still repeated the alleged libel, restating that Governor Ganduje appeared in several video clips it obtained receiving bribe, amounting to about $5million from contractors in the state.
It said its sting operation to capture the governor on camera began two years ago when one of the contractors agreed with DAILY NIGERIAN request to plant spy camera on his kaftan lapel while offering the bribe.

“During about 10 months efforts to capture the bribe giving/taking scenes, the governor’s face and body were clearly captured in nine clips, while six others did not clearly reveal the governor’s face.

“About $5m dollars were delivered to the governor during the sting operation”, it reported.
