On Monday June 16, 2025 evening, a case of unjust detention of a brother since June 12, 2025 by officers at the Shaki Police Station was reported. Debriefs were made and investigation started by contacting stakeholders to verify the claims. In the process, the suspect could not be interviewed by the night.
As early as 8;45am on Tuesday June 17, 2025 the stakeholders were already at the Shaki Police Station to facilitate speaking with the brother but the IPO was said not to be available. However, by quarter past 9 in the morning, the officer brought out the brother who was able to relay the whole truth concerning his unjust detention just for deciding to leave an employer who reneged on their promise but wanted to play smart that the brother stole his money. Note, this was the report.
Meanwhile, investigation revealed that the brother announced his intention to leave before Edl Adha 1446/2025 but a day to the celebration when he notified the boss he would be leaving, she was reported to have feigned ignorance of the information. However, her daughter who was said to have also been aware reminded her on Sallah day and so the brother was allowed to leave Benin Republic the second day of Salllah i.e June 7,2025 only to be arrested on June 12, 2025 in Shaki on the allegation of stealing his former boss money. As luck revealed, the brother was reported to have had just above N5,000 in his bank account at time of his arrest and nothing was found on him and in his house when combed.

Curiously, there was a claim that his former boss wanted him to return to her and serve a servitude bond to cover the purportedly missing money. It seems this trick is now a common practice as similar case was reported on June 11, 2025 in Lagos.
In line with best practice, Rights and Freedom Advocates (RIFA) reached out to the Shaki DPO; SUPOL Kehinde Odubanjo who acted swiftly and ensured the brother was released without collecting a dime from him. Actually, it is a constitutional right that the brother should have been compensated amidst public apology as contained in Section 35(6) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nonetheless, the brother freedom is paramount and that has been ensured by dutiful officers.
In the meantime, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Shaki; SP Kehinde Odubanjo prompt action at facilitating a meeting that secured bail of the brother is a good development for human rights protection in Nigeria. While appreciating the DPO and his team, RIFA would continue following the matter to a logical conclusion so that unjust detention would be reduced in our society
