Rooney Reveals How He Almost Lost His Career To Gambling

Ex-England international, Wayne Rooney admits he lost close to £1m in g*mbling which almost ruined his career. The former Manchester United forward lost £700,000 in five-month during his early stage at Old Trafford.

But a combination of life on the road as a young, naive footballer and the evolution of smartphones saw him lose £700,000 in just five months.

Rooney announced his return to English football creating an assist in Derby County‘s win over Barnsley.

He had admitted that losing a huge amount of money via betting affected his performances in the early stages of his career.

Rooney claimed he was “s*cked in” by early betting successes and blamed a mix of boredom and dangerous apps for his incredible losses.

The 34-year-old who recently joined Derby County lost a staggering £700,000 in the space of about five months back then.

Although, he rose to the top of his career where he earned the sum of £300,000 a week at Old Trafford. The earlier mistake in his career threw him off-balance.

According to SunSport, the Three Lions all-time goals scorer also lost £65,000 in just two hours at a cas*no 12 years ago but insisted he stopped the habit after recouping his loses.

While speaking at Contol G *mbling Awareness Campaign as part of 32Red’s Stay, Rooney revealed:

“I was a young lad who’d just come into a lot of money.

“You get bored and do things to fill the time. At that time gamblin was one of them.

“It was easy to place bets by phone. It didn’t feel like real money.

It wasn’t like I had to go into a bookies and put bets where there are limits.

“Before you know it you’ve lost a good bit and you don’t realise the amount you’re putting on.

“I won at the start and thought it was easy money. It s*cks you in a bit more and I ended up losing, ended up down.”

He resorted to ramping up his gambling habit in a bid to win his losses back.

The new Derby star continued:

“I ended up chasing my bets trying to win my money back.

“You’re there to play for your country or club and when you’re losing money the way I was then it will affect you.

“Thankfully I managed to pay up what I lost and I didn’t g*mble again. I’ve learned from my mistakes.

“If you carry on g*mbling, you lose more. That’s when you can get s*cked into a bad situation.”
