Following the conclusion of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Super Eagles are currently without a head coach.

Last year, Jose Peseiro inked a temporary deal with the NFF, which expired at the end of the AFCON tournament.

A crucial stipulation in the contract mandated Peseiro to guide the team to at least the semi-finals of the AFCON.

Despite initial skepticism surrounding Peseiro’s appointment, his tenure gained traction as he steered the Eagles to the tournament final, ultimately falling short with a 2-1 defeat against Ivory Coast.

The AFCON journey has undoubtedly elevated Peseiro’s standing among Nigerian football enthusiasts, with many acknowledging his ability to improve the team’s performance.

Oluwagbenga Adava, a prominent voice in Nigerian sports broadcasting, believes the AFCON campaign has significantly enhanced Peseiro’s perception. Adava notes, “The Nations Cup run added gloss over an albeit disappointing tenure so far. He turned a 3/10 into a 6.5.”

Peseiro’s ambition to propel Nigeria to the summit of African football is evident, as reflected in his recent tweet expressing a desire to elevate Nigeria to the top spot in Africa.

Amidst the debate surrounding Peseiro’s continuation, Adava emphasizes the importance of securing a capable replacement if the decision is made to part ways with the current coach.

Despite challenges such as delayed salary payments, indications suggest that Peseiro may retain his position within the NFF.

Looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, expectations are high for Peseiro to reinforce the squad, particularly in the midfield department.

Adava suggests intensifying scouting efforts across Europe to identify midfield talents that complement existing players like Bright Onyeka and Ralph Onyedika.

Ultimately, the success of Peseiro’s tenure hinges on his ability to address squad deficiencies and navigate Nigeria through the rigorous World Cup qualification campaign.
