The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has refuted claims that the State Assembly is planning to impeach the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Obasa who made the disclosure while responding to enquiries through his Chief Press Secretary, Musibau Razak, said there is no iota of truth in the speculation trending on social media and some online news websites that the Speaker wrote Governor Ambode not to go ahead with the plans to buy the nomination form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to re-contest his seat for second term.

The Speaker was alleged to have told the Governor not to re-contest or risk being impeached if he goes ahead with the plans. But while speaking exclusively to DailyTrust, Razak said the relationship between the Governor and Speaker is “smooth and solid”.

“The news of impeachment is political. A lot of information is being circulated here and there but there is no iota of truth in the report.

“Claims to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Ambode are false as the relationship between the Governor and Speaker is smooth and solid,” Razak said.

This is coming at a time when report emerged that Governor Ambode’s quest to be re-elected as Lagos State Governor for a second term may be facing major obstacle as over 50 council chairmen loyal to Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Ambode’s estranged godfather, met and pledged their support for Jide Sanyaolu Sanwonolu, who is believed to be Tinubu’s preferred choice.
