Lagos Ranks Second In List Of Cities That Could Disappear By 2100

Lagos, the bustling economic hub of Nigeria, has secured the second position in a concerning list highlighting cities at risk of disappearing by 2100.

According to the World Economic Forum citing data from the World of Statistics, Jakarta, Indonesia, claims the top spot on this distressing list, sinking at an alarming rate of 6.7 inches annually due to excessive groundwater extraction.

Lagos is also grappling with its own challenges, sinking at a rate of 0.3 inches per year while confronting the looming threat of coastal erosion.

Meanwhile, Houston in Texas, USA, is experiencing a descent of 0.2 inches per year, compounded by the imminent danger of hurricanes.

These three cities—Jakarta, Indonesia; Lagos, Nigeria; and Houston, Texas—stand at the forefront of this concerning trend. However, several other cities are also grappling with this issue, including Dhaka in Bangladesh, Venice in Italy, Virginia Beach in Virginia, Bangkok in Thailand, New Orleans in Louisiana, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Alexandria in Egypt.

Rounding off this alarming roster is Miami, Florida, holding the 11th spot.
