Renowned Nigerian skit maker and artist, Carter Efe, also known as Oderhwo Joseph Efe, recently disclosed his unexpected journey from being a skilled tailor to rising to fame.

The ‘Machala’ hitmaker emphasized that comedy was an inherent talent for him, tracing back to his early years. Efe confessed his lifelong affinity for art, a passion that led him to pursue tailoring at one point in his life.

In a recent appearance on the Hip TV show, Trending, hosted by reality personality KimOprah, Carter Efe shared insights into his comedic origins. “I’ve had a knack for humor since birth. I began doing stand-up comedy during my school days. During breaks, I’d naturally stand before my classmates, entertaining them and eliciting laughter,” he reminisced.

Reflecting on his past, Efe revealed, “I was a London-trained tailor, mastering the craft at ‘Obioma’, before transitioning into creating skits. I’ve always been drawn to artistry. For instance, I personally edit my skits. Once, I expressed my desire to learn tailoring to my father. He questioned my commitment to education, but my passion for creativity prevailed. I didn’t spend more than six months mastering the art of sewing.”

The transition from tailoring to comedy wasn’t devoid of challenges. Efe disclosed, “During my tailoring days, there were instances where I’d feign illness to shoot a skit, only to face repercussions later. My boss reprimanded me, making me kneel for the entire day as punishment.”

The turning point in his career came when a challenge posted by Broda Shaggi on Instagram altered his trajectory. Efe recounted, “While in Delta State, I participated in Shaggi’s challenge, and unexpectedly emerged as the winner, securing a PS5 as my prize. Upon collecting it and realizing its value, I sold it for approximately N300,000. This windfall prompted my decision to remain in Lagos.”

He continued, “With the funds earned, I utilized the N300,000 primarily for transportation to various shooting locations for my skits. During this time, I stayed with a friend, navigating my journey from tailoring to carving a niche in the comedic realm.”
