Ex Man Utd defender, Rio Ferdinand Says Red Devils Would Be a Championship Team Without Bruno Fernandes.
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed that the club would struggle significantly without Bruno Fernandes, suggesting that the Red Devils would be no better than a Championship-level team without the Portuguese playmaker.
Despite his impressive goal contributions over the years, Fernandes has often faced criticism from fans and pundits, with many questioning his attitude, leadership qualities, and positional discipline. However, Ferdinand strongly disagrees with this narrative, arguing that the 30-year-old is actually the most crucial player in Erik ten Hag’s squad.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former United defender highlighted Fernandes’ consistency and the impact he has had since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020. He believes that the Portuguese international is underrated and unfairly disrespected, especially given his impressive statistics.

“Bruno is massively disrespected. There’s so much talk about him not being captain material and constant criticism of his game,” Ferdinand said.
“Since he arrived, he’s delivered remarkable numbers: 28 goals and 17 assists in his first full season – that’s 45 goal involvements. In his second season, 10 goals and 14 assists. Then 14 goals and 14 assists in his third season. This season, he already has 10 goals and 12 assists. His numbers scream one thing: consistency and productivity.”

Ferdinand’s comments reinforce the argument that Fernandes remains United’s most reliable creative force, even when the team struggles. Despite recent criticism, his goal contributions and leadership on the pitch continue to make him an irreplaceable asset for the club.
