Why We Engage Inmates In Sports - NCoS Controller

Enugu State’s Controller of Corrections, Mr. Nicholas Obiako, emphasizes the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCoS) strategic use of sports to deter vices among inmates while fostering reformation and well-being within the centers.

During the finals of the Chief Emeka Okoye Football Competition, held at the Enugu Maximum Custodial Centre, Obiako highlighted NCoS’s commitment to leveraging sports as a tool for inmate rehabilitation.

He underscored the impactful reformation and rehabilitation initiatives driven by NCoS’s Controller-General, Mr. Haliru Nababa, aimed at deterring inmates from engaging in vices and attempting to escape from custodial centers.

According to Obiako, football tournaments are integral recreational activities orchestrated by the NCoS Command. These events encourage inmates to collaborate, channel their energy positively, and aspire to championship status.

“Annual events like the football competition foster happiness, encourage camaraderie within a short timeframe, and significantly reduce the inclination towards malicious intent,” Obiako stated.

He further outlined plans to expand competitive events to encompass various sports like table tennis, badminton, volleyball, Ludo, and Chess. These initiatives aim to nurture the talents and passions of inmates, providing them with avenues for further development.

“The consistent involvement in these sporting activities equips inmates with proficiency and prepares them for potential careers in these sports post-service,” he elaborated.

By implementing diverse sporting activities, the NCoS not only prioritizes inmate welfare but also seeks to equip them with skills that can be utilized beyond their custodial terms.
