Sowore was said to have been shot and was speaking with a detachment of police officers stationed at the public facility when an officer shot at the crowd.
Protesters had converged on the fountain at 8:30am. But the police allegedly denied them entry into the facility.
Sowore has been having a brush with law enforcement agents since 2020 when he was arrested and detained for months by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The shooting occurred at a tense time with growing outrage against insecurity and police brutality in Nigeria.
Footage from a live video of the incident showed the right activists and his team chanting solidarity songs before pandemonium struck.
The video showed officers arriving at the scene, with a small crowd led by Sowore when shots were heard and he collapsed on the ground.
Sowore’s lawyer, Mr. Inibehe Effiong, who confirmed the incident to Our Correspondent said his client was at the Unity Fountain for mass mobilisation of protesters ahead of a nationwide protest against insecurity on June 12.
Sowore, who confirmed the incident on his Twitter page, said he was shot at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
He wrote,
“Just been shot by a police officer, ACP Atine at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
“#RevolutionNow Let the struggle continue even if they take my life! #BuhariMustGo”
