Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has expressed concerns about the lineup revealed by head coach Jose Peseiro ahead of the highly anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an interview with Brila FM, Sodje voiced unease over what he perceives as an imbalance in the squad composition. He emphasized the absence of creative midfielders, essential for advancing gameplay and creating scoring opportunities.
“We’re heading to AFCON with an imbalanced squad, lacking the crucial creative spark in midfield. The team needs players who can drive the ball forward and craft opportunities to secure victories,” remarked Sodje.
The ex-Reading center-back also highlighted apprehensions regarding the team’s defensive strategy and goalkeeping department, emphasizing the pivotal role a solid defense plays in tournament success.
“Presently, we’re witnessing an overabundance of sideways passing without the necessary defensive solidity. This has led to conceding goals frequently, and it’s an aspect that demands urgent attention. A robust defense is fundamental to triumph in such competitions,” Sodje emphasized.

Addressing concerns about the goalkeeping dilemma, Sodje underscored the need for resolution in this critical area to fortify the team’s overall performance.
“While acknowledging our loyalty as Super Eagles supporters, it’s vital to acknowledge these worrisome issues. Solidifying our defense and resolving our goalkeeping concerns are crucial steps in bolstering our chances,” Sodje added.
The former defender concluded by affirming unwavering support for the Super Eagles despite the apprehensions raised.
