An Open Letter To Oyo State Government, By RIFA

RIFA Writes Oyo State Government, Laments poor state of Oyo roads, Hospitals and others

As part of its objectives, Rights and Freedom Advocates (RIFA) write Oyo State government on Monday 7th October, 2019 to lament the poor state of Oyo roads and hospitals including the worsening extortion attitude of members of Nigeria Police force on Oyo state roads.

Specifically, the message delivered to Oyo state governor and the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly pinpointed the precarious status of Oyo- Iseyin road as well as Ibadan-iseyin road.

The message also highlighted the worse condition of Iseyin-Shaki road as well as Shaki township main road crying for urgent attention.

In a similar vein, Shaki-Igboho and Igboho-Kishi roads status was also brought to the attention of the governor and the Speaker while special emphasis was laid on the decrepit condition of General Hospitals in Igboho, Igbo-ora and Igbeti including the Oyo State School of Nursing in Kishi.

The association also charged Oyo State government to check the extortion rate of members of Security agencies on Oyo State roads.

Precisely, the association named some police vans notorious for officers’ use in such illicit venture such as NPF 821D- SARS 18, Oyo State NPF 7638B. Oyo Ogbomosho SARS VAN, OB (Operation Burst) VAN 12. OB VAN in Kishi, NPF 7633B, NPF 6957C along Ipapo-Iseyin Road. And a golf car with Lagos number AKD Nigeria map BO (the number was covered with Nigeria map to commit crime against the state and the car is usually between Iseyin and Okaka road).

Despite the fact that the Police Act (2004) and Presidential directives criminalize such extortion. Oyo state is haven for most police officers to commit crime against the citizens they molest at any opportunity. The worst of such is the OB VAN in Igboora between Oyo and Ogun State boundary.

If the officers could not account for the money being collected on the roads, they should be handed over to anti-corruption agencies for prosecution and the heads of Security agencies should be made to account for their officers’ misdemeanour, the message concluded.

If those engaged by government to curb crimes now specialize in criminality, has Nigeria not engaged armed robbers and gave them uniform?

The various socio-cultural groups in the state are hereby charged to curb the criminality of some robbers in police uniform extorting drivers most of whom collect no salary from anyone.

The Association wish to monitor the situation and report accordingly to the public. RIFA ,therefore, charge Oyo state citizens and residents to be patient with the government as it acts on the issues brought to its attention by the association and other administrative challenges it confronts.

To the robbers in police uniform and other security agencies’ uniforms, RIFA charge them to be contended with what they are being given by the state and stop portraying Nigeria as a criminal State.

Those who bribe security officers should start regularizing their particulars as cumulative kickbacks often exceed what is due on their vehicles to state while any attempt to extort them thereafter should be pursued to logical conclusion.

Similarly, the security agencies hierarchy should start penalizing their misfits so as to eliminate criminals in their folds.
