Another chance for United just before the break. Fernandes’s corner was flicked on at the near post and headed just wide by Pogba. It was a good, instinctive effort from Pogba, with almost no reaction time, and it drifted past the far post.
The United players are starting to get frustrated. I’m not surprised – so far they have been outplayed by an excellent Villa side. But they almost stole the lead moments ago when Maguire’s header was superbly saved by Emi Martinez.
Another excellent change goes begging for Villa. This time it was Ezri Konsa, who headed Douglas Luiz’s corner over the bar from six yards.
United have been forced into an early substitution because of an injury to Luke Shaw. He’s replaced by Diogo Dalot.
Now there’s a penalty appeal at the other end when Maguire falls over after a tussle with Konsa. Mike Dean isn’t interested. Konsa took a risk but I don’t think there was enough contact for a penalty.
McGinn bursts away from Maguire and is clearly pulled back,, but Mike Dean doesn’t give a foul. There’s an argument, even though it was only just past the halfway line, that McGinn would have had a clear goalscoring opportunity had he not been fouled.
