'I Was Collecting N4,000 for a Lead Role in 2014' - Lateef Adedimeji

Nollywood actor Lateef Adedimeji has opened up about the financial struggles he faced early in his acting career, despite landing lead roles in movies. The ‘Jagun Jagun’ star shared his story on a recent episode of the ‘Deep Dive’ podcast, hosted by comedian Teju Babyface.

Reflecting on his early days in the industry, Adedimeji revealed that in 2014, he was earning as little as N4,000 for leading roles. “If I tell people that I wasn’t collecting N100,000 or N200,000 until 2015/16, a lot of people would not believe me,” he said. This starkly contrasts with the financial rewards and recognition he enjoys today.

Adedimeji’s journey in Nollywood began with modest earnings that were scarcely enough to cover basic expenses. “Before then, the highest I collected for a lead role was either N4,000, N5,000, or N10,000,” he disclosed. This period of his career was more about gaining experience and learning the ropes of the acting world, rather than financial gain.

The actor’s story is a testament to his perseverance and dedication. Despite the low pay, Adedimeji continued to pursue his passion for acting, honing his craft and building his reputation within the industry. His big break came in 2015, when he finally began earning between N100,000 and N200,000 per role, marking a significant turning point in his career.

His success today stands as a testament to the importance of resilience, hard work, and the willingness to endure tough times for the sake of one’s dreams.

His story also sheds light on the broader issue of underpayment in Nollywood, especially for emerging talents. It underscores the need for better compensation structures and support for young actors, who are the future of the industry.

Now a prominent figure in Nollywood, Adedimeji’s journey from earning N4,000 per role to becoming a well-compensated actor is a remarkable narrative of growth and success. His experiences serve not only as motivation for those starting out but also as a call to the industry to recognize and reward talent appropriately.

Adedimeji’s tale is a powerful reminder that behind the glamour and fame often associated with the film industry, there are stories of struggle, perseverance, and hard-earned success. His journey is a beacon of hope for many, proving that with determination and resilience, success is attainable.
