Former Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater, officially declared his retirement from professional football on Monday, citing a prolonged period of feeling “in limbo.”
Drinkwater’s career took off during his time at Leicester City, where he played a pivotal role in their remarkable Premier League triumph in 2016. However, his fortunes took a different turn when he transferred to Chelsea a year later.
At Chelsea, the 33-year-old English midfielder struggled to establish himself and was subsequently sent on unsuccessful loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa.
In an interview on The High-Performance Podcast, Drinkwater expressed his decision to retire, stating, “It’s been a long time coming, especially with the past year. I believe it’s time to make it official now.”

He went on to explain his rationale, saying, “I’ve been in a state of limbo for far too long. I’ve had the desire to play, but I haven’t had the opportunity to participate at a level where I felt truly valued.”
Reflecting on his mixed feelings about the game, he added, “I find contentment both in not playing football and in playing football. So, do I simply bid farewell to the sport?”
