Patrice Evra, the former Manchester United defender, recently offered support to goalkeeper Andre Onana following his error during Man United 3-2 win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Throughout the season, Onana has faced criticism for a string of errors while playing for Man United. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was once again under scrutiny for potentially being at fault for Aston Villa’s initial goal against the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
During the game, Onana remained rooted to his position on the line when he could have moved forward to collect a ball that bounced approximately two yards away. Despite this, Evra defended Onana during his analysis on Amazon Prime, stating, “It depends on the goalkeeper’s style. Someone like Thibaut Courtois might have advanced to intercept Aston Villa’s first goal.”

Drawing from his experience playing alongside goalkeeping greats like Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea, Evra highlighted that certain keepers, including his former teammates, might not have approached the situation in the same way. He emphasized, “People may point fingers and call it a goalkeeper error, but I believe it’s more about the individual style of the goalkeeper.”
