Euro 2024: “This is Not Football” – Denmark Coach Hjulmand Laments After Defeat to Germany

Euro 2024: This is not football - Denmark coach, Hjulmand cries out after defeat to Germany

Denmark’s head coach, Kasper Hjulmand, has strongly criticized the video assistant referee (VAR) after his team was eliminated from the 2024 European Championship in a dramatic Round of 16 clash against Germany. The Danish coach’s frustration was palpable as he voiced his concerns about the controversial VAR decisions that he believes significantly impacted the outcome of the match.

The match, held on Saturday, saw Denmark’s hopes dashed as a goal was disallowed and a penalty was awarded to their opponents, Germany. The Danes, who had shown promising form throughout the tournament, were left reeling from these decisions.

The controversy began in the 48th minute when Denmark thought they had taken the lead through a well-executed goal by Joachim Andersen. However, their celebrations were abruptly halted as the officials, upon reviewing the play, ruled the goal out due to a marginal offside decision. The Danish players and fans were left in disbelief as the decision was made.

Adding to their woes, just five minutes later, in the 53rd minute, Germany was awarded a penalty after a VAR review for a contentious handball incident. The decision further compounded Denmark’s difficulties, as they struggled to regain their composure and momentum.

In his post-match press conference, Hjulmand did not hold back his disappointment. “I rarely talk about these decisions, but it was very decisive for this game,” he stated. “It’s frustrating. Being in front 1-0 would have changed everything.”

Hjulmand also criticized the current use of VAR, particularly the fine margins involved. “This is not how we’re supposed to be using VAR; it’s one centimetre. And after a few minutes, there’s a penalty. I’m so tired of the ridiculous handball rules. We can’t require our defenders to run like this; it’s not natural!” he exclaimed.

In his passionate address, Hjulmand expressed a sentiment shared by many in the football community who are growing increasingly frustrated with the implementation of VAR and its impact on the game’s flow and spirit. “In my opinion, this is not how football is supposed to be,” he concluded.

The defeat marks a disappointing end to Denmark’s Euro 2024 campaign, as they exit the tournament amid a storm of controversy and debate over the role of technology in football. The match will undoubtedly be remembered not just for the football played but for the critical decisions made by the officials, sparking discussions that will likely continue long after the tournament has ended.
