Emiliano Sala’s death confirmed as body found in plane wreckage identified as Cardiff City striker
The body found in the wreckage of the plane carrying Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson has been identified as the Cardiff City striker, it was confirmed on Thursday night.
The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had confirmed on Wednesday that an unidentified body had been passed to the Dorset Coroner, having been recovered from the submerged plane.
The Piper Malibu aircraft disappeared with Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board on January 21, with the 28-year-old en route to Cardiff after having completed a club-record transfer from Ligue 1 side Nantes.
A police statement issued late on Thursday read:
“The body brought to Portland Port today, Thursday 7 February 2019, has been formally identified by HM Coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala.
Sala’s family members are also said to have been told that their son has passed on
Emiliano Sala has finally been confirmed dead after police stated clearly that the body found in the crashed plane is that of the former Cardiff City striker.
Sala’s tragic death now throws football fraternities in the world into deep mourning as many had hoped probably he would survive from the plane disaster.
The 28-year-old Argentine striker was traveling from Nantes to meet his former teammates at Cardiff City when the plane he boarded suddenly crashed into the English channel.
Authorities have been looking for the wreckage since last two weeks before it was found on Sunday, February 3, 2019.
The small plane carrying Emiliano Sala and Mr Ibbotson, 59, was found off the coast of Alderney in the English Channel.
Emiliano Sala’s body was identified by the Dorset coroner, but so far there has been no reported trace of that of the pilot David Ibbotson.
His families who have been hoping for him to survive have been told the devastating news and they are being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.
“Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.
“HM Coroner will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death supported by Dorset Police,” a spokesman for Dorset Police said according to Sun UK.
