Chelsea & Villarreal are already in at the group stage for this campaign’s Champions League and are trying to make a strong start to the term as they seek improved domestic displays on top of further European success. Chelsea led 1-0 at halftime through Hakim Ziyech’s strike. But Ziyech left later in the first half with an injury and was replaced with American Christian Pulisic. Gerard Moreno scored an equalizer for Villarreal in the 73rd minute.
Alonso wins the ball high up the pitch and leaves Pulisic to take the ball. He darts across the box trying to create space for a shot. He dummies once, twice and then shoots only for Alonso to block it whilst standing in an offside position.
It’s all Chelsea now. They’ve stepped up a gear since the equaliser but Villarreal are defending deep and engaging as many time-wasting tactics as possible. Jorginho slots a nice ball round the corner to find Pulisic in the box. He shoots on the spin and forces Asenjo into a sharp save before the offside flag goes up.

Cesar Azpilicueta comes on for Chelsea replacing Callum Hudson-Odoi. Chelsea’s captain gets into the action immediately and wins a corner as Estupinan blocks his cross into the box. The corner ball falls to Jorginho on the edge of the box. He shoots but his effort hits Pino and deflects wide.
If there isn’t another goal then the match goes into extra time, something that won’t please Thomas Tuchel ahead of this weekend’s opening Premier League fixtures. Pulisic wins a corner for Chelsea even though he got the last touch on the ball before it went out. Alonso flicks the ball into the box. It gets headed on at the near post before Asenjo punches it clear.
