On Monday night, Arsenal made it as hard as possible against Leeds United.
But after Reiss Nelson’s scruffy finish midway through the second half, the Gunners qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup for the 23rd time in the last 24 years.
It made Leeds look like the Premier League team, even if the sense grew that it was going to be one of those games where they would regret missing so many first-half chances.
That could well suit them, given this is a promotion-chasing club that could do without the extra complication of a cup run, and so much is made about his squads gradually running out of steam.
Which is why there’s that potential quip about this match being that issue in microcosm. Leeds started like a whirlwind, only to trail off.
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta named a strong team, resting only a handful of players.
There’s also the fact this felt an even more animated Leeds performance at the start.
After Leeds’ excellent first-half display, it was easy to see why he was so wary. In the end, the Gunners scrape out the victory, but it wasn’t all that deserved.
It was as if the four changes, two extra days’ rest and single grand stage this represented did bring out more exhilarated force to the team than the energy-sapping Christmas schedule.
